Welcome to another installment of Seeds & Sand, a daily haiku prompt. I’m glad you’re here.

I’m sick and tired of the news and the cold weather. How about you?  Let’s try to write about something completely fanciful today: mermaids.

Wade into the ocean with me. Feel the cool water; feel the shifting sand beneath your feet. Smell the salt air; enjoy the wind in your hair. Can you hear the ocean’s roar and the crying of seagulls?   Was that a seashell you stepped on?

Scan the waves with me. Do you see dolphins .. or maybe mermaid(s)?

Here is an Issa-like haiku:

all that barking!
i wish the sea lions
were mermaids

And this haiku is more Buson-like:

monterey:
among the whips of kelp
mermaids play

“Salt” by Eivor Palsdottir, from the Faroe Islands.

The salt in my body
The ocean inside of me
An intoxicating tide
A current of aching

And the sea grows heavy
Every pull is abyss-bound
I know that I must leave
I know that I can

In sub-skin chasms surges my longing
Uproots time, erodes my dread

Far from the shore
I glimpse faint memories
I let the heavy sea take me
I sense the tremor of the deep

The ocean swells in me
Is the salt in my tears

And the sea grows heavy
Every pull is abyss-bound
know that I must leave
I know that I can

Share your mermaid-inspired haiku or tanka here. Good luck, and happy writing!
